Typography solutions in videos

Animated typography

The typography in videos can be used both animated and static. The best use is determined by the length of the video itself and the time you have for the text parts. If the video is very dynamic and fast moving, static texts and fast transitions work best.

In videos where there is more time for the texts, they work best animated.

Composition and visual examples

Always primarily use left aligned texts. The texts are aligned to the first column on the left. The headline is then centered to the canvas.

Exception to the rule

In some cases when we only have short, one-line headlines, centered text often looks better than left aligned.

Primary text placement

Due to the headline texts usually looking best and catching the most attention on the top, the primary text placement in social media videos is on the top. To achieve the best composition and flow this means that the logo is placed on the opposite corner at the bottom.

Clear space

Remember that the story format has an extra clear space of about 250 px on the top and at the bottom reserved for automatically generated Meta’s UI-elements.

Secondary text placement

If the headline looks better at the bottom in regards of the visual in use, then the text can be at the bottom and the logo on the top.

If the text is aligned to the bottom of the canvas in 4:5 and 1:1 materials, make sure to have 10% of clear space at the bottom in order to keep the composition airy. Texts aligned straight to the bottom margins can easily look heavy.

Flexibility

Of course, there should always be room for flexibility when creating video content. When creating other than headline level typography layouts in videos, make use of the grid. In some cases, the videos might have specific numbers and values that need to be showcased. In these scenarios a larger font size may be used in the numerals. Sync the sizing of the numerals with the size of the headline if a headline is present.
